Wife of the Ondo State
Governor, Mrs. Olukemi Mimiko, and the Provost of Adeyemi College of Education,
Ondo, Prof. Adeyemi Idowu, on Tuesday renewed the call for the upgrade of the
institution to a university.
They said the college
already had more than what it takes to be a full-fledged university. Mimiko
stated this at the 32nd Convocation Exhibition of the Adeyemi College of
Education, Ondo.
Idowu, for instance,
said half of the academic staff of the institution would have their various PhD
degrees by next year.
The provost, who
stated this at a news conference to mark the 32nd convocation ceremony of the
institution, said the development had underscored the need to upgrade the
college to a university.
He said most
universities in the country could not boast the massive infrastructural
facilities at the college, describing as first class, the level of manpower
development going in the school through quality instruction.
He said, “We will
continue to produce high level of graduates but we are constrained by paucity
of funds because we are funded based on our status as a college of education.
“There are so many
universities that cannot boast of our modern, tstae-of-the art-facilities that
we have on ground.
“We have more first
degree students on campus than the regular NCE students. In fact, out of the 3,
657 students that are graduating this year, only 1, 400 of them are NCE
holders. The rest are first degree graduates.
“We encouraged our
lecturers to go for higher degrees over the years and by next year, more than
half of them would PhD degrees which made us over-ripped to be a university.
